Built in 1990, with extensions added in 2002, the Castro Hotel is set in the resort town of Ammoudara, 300 metres from a sandy beach. The 60 guestrooms over four floors have simple white decor and functional furnishings and open onto balconies with sea views. All have satellite television, telephones, refrigerators and bathrooms with showers.
The hotel is set amid gardens, and features an outdoor pool complete with a sun terrace and a poolside bar serving refreshments and cocktails. The Maxim Restaurant serves Cretan and international dishes and is open daily for breakfast and dinner. Multilingual staff at the 24 hour front desk can look after valuables in the safe deposit box. Motorists will find complimentary parking on site. The hotel is sited five kilometres from the Archaeological Museum in Heraklion Old Town. The Minoan Palace of Knossos is 12 kilometres from the hotel and the Archanes archaeological sites are 16 kilometres away. Heraklion Airport is eight kilometres from the hotel, with an approximate driving time of 20 minutes.

Both taxis and buses can be found right outside the airport. A typical taxi fare to the hotel should be 20 EUR; fares should be agreed beforehand. The best way to get around Crete is by rental car or bike, although buses go to most places throughout the island. The Cretan bus company KTEL has stations in all the larger cities and stops all along the routes. Many locations are also accessible by ferry and boat taxi. Taxies in Crete are reasonable but visitors should make sure the driver uses the meter.
